Construction has commenced this week on a new renal dialysis unit at Emerald Hospital, providing kidney care closer to home.

The purpose-built facility will mean eligible patients who currently travel to Rockhampton for regular dialysis treatment will be able to receive their care locally.

The new renal dialysis unit will provide five treatment chairs, with patients able to access additional clinical support at the hospital, if required.

More than 40 workers are expected on-site during peak construction, with final designs now progressing ahead of main building works commencing in 2027.

Central Queensland Health Chief Executive Lisa Blackler said the new unit would strengthen local renal services and improve access to specialised care.

“Dialysis is an essential, ongoing treatment for people living with kidney disease, and being able to receive that care locally can make a significant difference to their quality of life,” Ms Blackler said.

“This facility will enable our clinical teams to deliver safe, high-quality dialysis treatment at Emerald Hospital, supported by the hospital’s existing clinical services.

“With construction underway, our focus is on preparing the facility, workforce and clinical services to ensure patients can access the best possible care when the unit opens in 2028.”
