Biloela maternity vacancies

Staff share what it’s like to work and live in Biloela, from providing maternity care to strong team support and community life in a regional town.

>> Kim, Director of Nursing and Midwifery:

So I came to work at Biloela Hospital when my husband transferred here. So we were only coming for three years, and we are still here 23 years later.

I think there are some really exciting opportunities for midwives moving forward in Biloela. We're about to reestablish our birthing services after being on bypass for a few years, and that's looking at a change in our model.

>> Di, Clinical midwife:

We're working at top of our scope here as midwives, looking after women out here at Biloela and also in the surrounding areas in the Banana region, working alongside our medical colleagues.

>> Bernie, Midwifery educator:

It's great for the women and it's great for our teams, and it's certainly great to be a midwife in this kind of model because you'll be able to work to your scope of practice.

>> Emma, Registered nurse and student midwife:

We work quite closely with nurses and doctors in Rocky and Gladstone as well. We can always just pick up the phone and call on them for advice or guidance.

>> Sally, Clinical midwife:

Working at Biloela Hospital makes my life really easy.

With the kids, the school's just across the road, and I can pop over if I'm called in. It's never really far to travel anywhere in town, so I can be at sport, swimming, dancing, and then I can come back to the hospital if I'm called in.

>> Bernie:

What is great about the small community is that then the next thing you know, that woman is back having her next baby or her sister. Everyone is interlinked, and it is just a lovely feeling to be part of a community.

>> Sally:

Some of the most favorite parts of my job working rurally is that it's really diverse and things that I wouldn't see working in the city. Going on transfers, interacting with the Retrieval Services Queensland, doing home visits down country roads are just things that I never experienced working in the city.

>> Emma:

Biloela is about an hour away from Tannum Sands and just less than two hours away from Rockhampton.

So my commute to work is about three minutes, and I live on the complete opposite side of town. So I literally just roll in, park for free, and walk into work all within five minutes. It's great.

>> Di:

I definitely think if you would like to develop your skills as a midwife and be well-supported and learn new things and grow as a midwife, this is the place to do it.

I really love being a part of the community.

I've been really lucky and blessed to be a part of the Biloela Netball Association, and I have a wonderful team that I coach.

>> Emma:

So there's plenty of opportunities for partners and families here. So my partner, he works out at the mine.

>> Di:

I feel like I'm a better practitioner because I moved here.

>> Sally:

If you are considering working rurally, Biloela is a great place to be. You can work across the full scope of practice, life is really easy, you're well-supported, and it's a great community to live in.

Career pathways

Work in our new adult inpatient mental health service

We're looking for nurses to join us as we step into the future of mental health care for Central Queensland.

Be among the first to work in our modern 32-bed inpatient facility. It's purpose-built for staff and patient wellbeing.

Our mental health clinicians share why they chose Rockhampton, highlighting the supportive team, lifestyle benefits, and new services shaping care in the region.
Duration: 2:56

>> Jo – Clinical Nurse:

So what attracted me to the region was me and my husband were working separate shifts, and we were complete ships in the night.

An opportunity came up for my husband to be a CNC for the early psychosis team.

And just the region, just everything just seemed so much nicer than where we were at the time.

>> Phil – Clinical Nurse Consultant:

There was a number of things that surprised me about the region.

I think the first thing that stood out was that everybody was friendly.

And that's not to say they haven't been friendly where I've been before, but I think people seem to have a bit more time for you here. They're very welcoming.

>> Iain – Nurse Manager, Acute Care Services:

It's a little bit more laid back up here.

The work's the same, the people are the same, but it's just a little bit more laid back. Looking at the expansions and just the changes that are occurring here is something that really appealed to me.

Got a new building coming up, mental health inpatient unit, but we've also got some smaller boutique services that we're kind of putting into effect here in Rockhampton.

>> Solveigh – Clinical Psychologist:

So I've come actually from a metro area, and something that really attracted me here is the lifestyle, and also the better commute to and from work and better parking, and also housing affordability.

One of the other pros for Queensland Health is the work-life balance and flexible working arrangements.

I have recently been off on maternity leave and just returned, and being able to come back and work in a really supportive environment where I can balance that work and family life.

>> Phil:

Working in regional mental health is different, and I think one of the differences for me that's really struck me is that there's less available to us as a service, but people seem to really excel when it comes to that and really make the best of everything they have, which gives us all really a closeness and makes for a better team. And people are looking out for one another more.

>> Jo:

My manager has been really good at pointing out what I'm doing really well and just appreciating what you do a bit more, which is nice.

>> Solveigh:

Big focus is really around ensuring that there is a supportive staff culture, and that wellbeing of staff is actually at the centre of it as well, and also that there are those ongoing opportunities for career development and progression.

>> Phil:

There's definitely an opportunity to work to your full scope of practice. I've arrived here and taken on a more senior position. It's now allowing me to expand my knowledge.

>> Iain:

So joining my team, look, it's challenging, but then mental health is challenging.

But if you want some variety, covering ED, CL, acute care, there's the inpatient unit, there is so much opportunity here.

And there's so much funding going into our area as a whole. It is literally an exciting time to be looking at coming to somewhere like Rockhampton or the Cap Coast.

It's the time to come to an area that's changing, and changing positively, and just creating a better client experience.
