Capricorn Coast Hospital’s Clinical Director of Medical Services, Dr Andrew Scott, describes his role as “a huge privilege and absolute pleasure.”

Nearly a year after his appointment, he’s still loving the work–life balance that Central Queensland offers.

“It’s not just about the physical beauty of Central Queensland,” Dr Andrew shared in a LinkedIn post. “I work in a community and health service that values and respects my Rural Generalist skill set, even before we received national recognition as a new and distinct specialty.”

As a Rural Generalist, Dr Andrew is passionate about delivering comprehensive, patient-centred and culturally safe care. He brings advanced skills in Obstetrics, Surgery and Endoscopy, and his broad scope of practice helps deliver high-quality care closer to home for Central Queenslanders.

In 2025, Dr Andrew was named Queensland Rural Generalist of the Year by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) – an honour he credits to the entire Central Queensland Health team.

“I think it’s our award,” he said. “It was only made possible in a service where Rural Generalism is valued and supported by leadership, non-GP specialty colleagues, the multidisciplinary team and the community. It’s further evidence that Central Queensland is an awesome place to be a Rural Generalist!”

His recognition continues our proud legacy of producing some of Queensland’s most influential rural doctors, including former ACRRM Presidents Dr Alan (Bruce) Chater and Dr Ewen McPhee. Among our team are also recipients of the RDAQ Denis Lennox Medal for Outstanding Rural Registrar and AMA Queensland Gold Medal.

A strong advocate for advancing rural healthcare, Dr Andrew has led several initiatives to improve patient access and strengthen clinical confidence across regional hospitals. One of his most notable achievements is introducing the Endoscopist-Directed Nurse-Administered Propofol Sedation (EDNAPS) program – a first for Central Queensland. This innovative model has increased access to safe, efficient endoscopy services for our community.

Dr Andrew is also deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of Rural Generalists and supporting doctors to undertake Advanced Skills Training (AST) through Central Queensland Health.

This kind of leadership helps us provide pathways for junior doctors to start and complete their Rural Generalist training right here in Central Queensland. We offer accredited opportunities for prevocational and AST, along with the chance to apply those skills while completing fellowship training.

Our training pathways are flexible and responsive to individual goals and community needs. With guidance from clinical directors like Dr Andrew, our junior doctors can build rewarding careers locally while delivering high-quality care closer to home.

For Dr Andrew, the team plays a big role in his passion for Central Queensland:

“There really is nothing quite like joining a great team! I’m talking culture on point, seamless teamwork across disciplines, support in spades from multiple levels, plenty of clinical courage to get the job done, opportunities to grow when you want them, and a stable team around you.

I still, on a weekly basis, find something new to enjoy that leaves me feeling absolutely stoked with my decision.”
