Gladstone Hospital’s new Women and Family Centre has reached practical completion this week, with maternity and paediatric services set to begin operating from the hospital’s West Wing from 2 July.
The purpose-built facility brings maternity and paediatric services together, delivering more coordinated, family-centred care for the Gladstone region.
Designed to enhance comfort, privacy and the overall patient experience, the centre features modern single rooms with ensuites, new birth suites, a nursery and a dedicated paediatric ward.
Central Queensland Health Chief Executive Lisa Blackler said the new centre would strengthen family-centred maternity and paediatric care, creating a welcoming environment that supports better experiences for mothers, children and their families.
“This new centre will enhance our services and enable our outstanding maternity and paediatric teams to deliver an even better experience for women, babies and children in the Gladstone region,” Ms Blackler said.
The facility includes two birth suites, early labour rooms and flexible maternity spaces that support women to remain in the same room throughout labour wherever possible, along with overnight facilities for support people.
“As a nurse and qualified midwife, I am passionate about ensuring our birthing spaces support privacy, comfort and family connection during such an important time.
“The purpose-built paediatric space enhances care for children, with modern, self-contained rooms, dedicated treatment areas and thoughtful, family-focused features that create a more comfortable, supportive and welcoming environment close to home.”
The centre has also been designed with cultural safety in mind, incorporating artwork, natural elements and spaces that support connection to Country.
From July, the Women and Family Centre will strengthen care for women, children and families across the Gladstone region.
