Summary
Clinical Nurse Kate is a valued member of our Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Service in Rockhampton, Central Queensland. Having moved from New South Wales for her role with us, we sat down with Kate to chat about why she chose to join our team and what she’s loving most about work and life here in Central Queensland.
Can you tell us about your role?
I’m a Clinical Nurse specialising in Sexual Health and Blood Borne Viruses at Rockhampton. My role includes providing free and confidential sexual health screening and treatment, as well as the management of HIV and hepatitis. I also work closely with our doctor to deliver the Choices service, supporting our patients with safe and informed care.
What do you love about it?
I’ve really valued the autonomy of working in a nurse-led clinic and I’m fortunate to be part of a supportive team. No two days are the same, which keeps the work interesting and rewarding. Most importantly, I love building rapport with patients and ensuring they feel safe and welcome when coming into our clinic.
Tell us about your journey, why did you become a nurse?
I became a nurse at the age of 18, I have always enjoyed caring for people and helping them on their own journey, and I thought I would turn that into a career. I’ve been a nurse for 14 years now and spent much of that time in hospital settings, particularly as a theatre nurse in NSW. In 2022 and 2023, I worked in rural and remote communities across Australia and fell in love with Queensland. I always seen myself moving into community-based nursing, especially in sexual health, as I’m passionate about reducing stigma and empowering people to take charge of their sexual health with confidence.
What inspired your journey to come and work in Central Queensland?
I saw a position advertised in Rockhampton for Sexual Health & Blood Borne Viruses while living in NSW and decided to apply, as I was ready for a change. I was thrilled to be offered the role, and it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’ve loved living in Central Queensland and living in Yeppoon by the beach, being part of a welcoming community, and working alongside colleagues who make every day enjoyable.
What is your favourite part about living here?
Central Queensland offers such a great lifestyle. It’s a much more relaxed pace of life compared to back home, but there’s always something to do, whether that’s a day trip to the islands, exploring Byfield, hiking, or attending events. My weekends are always full of adventure and fun, and the beautiful weather is always a bonus! 😊
