Graduate Registered Nurses in Central Queensland are supported to complete their post-graduate qualifications in mental health nursing thanks to our Health Academic Partnership Program with CQUniversity.

Since 2022, Central Queensland Health’s Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program has combined on-the-ground clinical experience with postgraduate study to support Registered Nurses to pursue a career in mental health care.

As part of the Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program, Registered Nurses can complete a Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Nursing for half the cost, as two of four required units are covered by the partnership. The program also offers extensive clinical opportunities, including six workshops to improve skills in specific mental illnesses, clinical skills assessments, and 20 hours of clinical supervision.

When Jack joined our team as an Enrolled Nurse in 2023, he was already passionate about making a difference.

After completing his undergraduate nursing studies at CQUniversity in Rockhampton, he began working in our Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drug Service and started working towards completing his post-graduate study.

“I currently work in community mental health as part of a multi-disciplinary team,” Jack says. “We support consumers in achieving their recovery goals at home or following discharge from the inpatient unit. That includes medication monitoring, psychoeducation, helping build strategies for independence, and working with other supports in their lives.”

The Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program has given Jack the opportunity to sharpen his clinical skills while learning from a supportive and collaborative team. “It’s been a great environment to grow professionally,” he explains. “The team is very approachable, and each day presents new opportunities to learn.”

Central Queensland Health is committed to supporting mental health nurses at every stage of their career. From structured graduate pathways to clinical supervision and university partnerships, we are focused on building a skilled and confident mental health workforce. Our team of nurses are encouraged to continue learning with support to specialise in community-based, recovery-focused care of people with a mental health disorder, acute adult, and older person’s inpatient care.

As for life outside of work, Jack says Rockhampton is a region that’s easy to fall in love with.

“Rockhampton is like a big country town – there’s so much history and natural beauty,” he says. “I love the cooler winters, and the hot summers are perfect for outdoor adventures and water activities.”

Jack has shared some of his favourite photos from his time in Rockhampton.
