Children visiting Community Health at Gladstone Hospital can now enjoy a beautiful new mural in the play area.

Created by local children’s author and illustrator Stevie Russell, the artwork is titled “A Hug from the Sea 2025”.

Stevie was engaged by Cosmos Arts for Health, who commissioned the artwork and collaborated with Community Health staff to develop a theme that would appeal to children and reflect Gladstone’s connection to the ocean.

“I love creating art that sparks imagination and soothes the spirit, especially in spaces where comfort matters most,” Stevie said.

“As an artist, the ocean is what I’m most drawn to, and as a mum, I feel very proud to share my painting in a space that will bring joy to children every day.”

Community Health Administration Officer Nadia says it’s already bringing smiles to young patients.

“It is lovely to watch their eyes light up as they notice all the different sea creatures, and, as part of the project, we also have matching colouring-in pages to allow kids to get creative.

“The mural is such an amazing addition to our waiting room and I’d like to thank Stevie and Cosmos Arts for Health for bringing it to life.”

Treasurer Rayleen Donohoe said Cosmos Arts for Health was proud to be able to bring colour into healthcare spaces and showcase the talents of local artists.

“As always, we are grateful to our many community sponsors who support us to deliver meaningful art projects for our local community.”

A big thank you to Cosmos Arts for Health Inc, with support from Aestec Services, Regional Arts Fund (Australian Government), Regional Arts Australia, Flying Arts Alliance, Connell Enterprises, Nhulundu Health Service, Santos GLNG and CQ Shines Foundation, for bringing this project to life.
