Summary

A new purpose-built antenatal and postnatal clinic is now under construction, further strengthening maternity services and supporting the return of birthing to Biloela Hospital.

Chief Executive Lisa Blackler says Central Queensland Health is moving ahead to reintroduce birthing services, with physical building works happening alongside recruitment of staff and development of a safe, sustainable model of care.

A public information session was recently held at Biloela Hospital to keep interested community members informed of progress.

“This new clinic building will be family friendly, housing two consultation rooms, a waiting room with a play area, workspace and amenities for patients and staff,” Ms Blackler said.

“A modular building is being constructed and fitted out in Brisbane and will be transported to Biloela to further strengthen maternity care for the region.

“These dedicated spaces will support our Biloela team to provide services, including education sessions, to women before and after birth.”

This building is in addition to a freshly revamped birthing suite (pictured below) that will further enhance birthing services when they return.

Six modern and comfortable staff accommodation units have also been built to help with the attraction of clinicians. This includes three one-bedroom units, and three three-bedroom units.

A bespoke recruitment campaign has also been launched to attract suitably trained health professionals to live and work in Biloela.

“We are working towards a sustainable model of care that will include experienced midwives, local doctors, GP obstetricians and specialist obstetricians,” Ms Blackler said.

“This service model is being designed especially for Biloela and surrounding communities and will support women with low-risk pregnancies to give birth closer to home.

“We understand that it has been a real challenge for local women to travel away from family for the birth of their babies, both financially and emotionally, which is why we are working hard to return a suitable service locally.

“Our team is beyond excited to be on track to delivering safe and sustainable birthing services in Biloela once more.”
