Summary

Central Queensland hospitals are open and ready for emergencies right through the Christmas holiday period, but staff would rather not see you.

Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Lisa Blackler hopes residents have a merry time but urges them to do so safely.

“During our hot holidays it’s vital to stay hydrated and make sure you drink plenty of water along with your festive tipple,” she said.

“If Santa brings presents with wheels, such as bikes, scooters and skateboards, please make sure all the safety gear is provided with them, and don’t mix riding with alcohol.

“It’s also essential to stay safe on the roads while travelling during the holidays. Don’t speed, wear seatbelts, stop for regular breaks, and don’t drink and drive.

“Our team is always on deck to handle any accidents, but you really don’t want to be spending time in an Emergency Department if you can avoid it,” Ms Blackler said.

Another essential Christmas message is to stay safe with festive food.

Angela Rea, Environmental Health Manager from Central Queensland Public Health Unit, urges residents to take care when preparing food and saving leftovers.

“While tasty treats are an important part of our festive traditions, please take note of some simple but vital tips to keep your guests well.”

These include:

  • Abide by expiry and “use-by” dates
  • Don’t use opened or damaged packaging
  • Ensure your food’s plastic seals are intact
  • Don’t use bulging cans
  • Wash your hands regularly while preparing
  • Keep hot food hot, and cold food cold
  • Clean and sanitise plates, utensils and cooking equipment
  • Reduce risks of pests and animals getting into your food.
