Central Queenslanders received important free health checks and advice at the CQ Health Sport and Recreation Expo in Gladstone.
The event on Saturday 24 October brought together around 40 local health services, sporting clubs and community groups.
The day was a resounding success with attendees hearing directly from guest speaker and CrossFit Games competitor Astin Bidgood about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.
People received free health checks with My Health for Life, free skin checks with a GP, and learned about everything from nutrition and mental health to bowel screening and organ donation.
Central Queensland Health Chief Executive Lisa Blackler said the event was an important reminder for people to take care of themselves and let them know what supports are available so they can live healthier lives.
“The expo was an opportunity for us to connect directly with the Gladstone community, providing people with help to take control of their health,” she said.
“It was wonderful walking around and seeing so many people engage with stallholders and take steps towards a healthier lifestyle.
“Many of the health conditions we treat are preventable, and small changes like being more active and getting regular checks make a real difference.”
Central Queensland Public Health Unit Senior Medical Officer Dr Michael Kirk said the free event gave locals the chance to find the support they need, in the one place.
“Gladstone is full of amazing clubs, groups and local services, but a lot of people don't know what's out there or where to start,” he said.
“We wanted to bring it all together in one place so families could find something that fits them.”
The free event was also a chance for people to meet local sporting clubs and take part in come-and-try activities.
“Sometimes looking after your health is as simple as finding a sport you love, a group to walk with, or having a quick chat at a stall,” Dr Kirk said.
“For families and young people, finding a sport or activity they enjoy is one of the best things they can do for their health.”
Central Queensland Health partnered with My Health for Life, run by the Stroke Foundation, to bring the event to Gladstone.
The next CQ Health Sport and Recreation Expo is in Rockhampton on Saturday 20 February 2027 at Frenchville Sports Club.
