Summary

Gladstone Hospital’s new Women and Family Centre is moving ahead, with contractor Bridgeman progressing works on site. Demolition has been completed, and work has commenced on internal fixtures, cabinetry and room upgrades.

This purpose-built centre will offer modern, single-occupancy rooms with ensuites, ensuring greater privacy and comfort for patients and their families.

The new facility, located in the hospital’s West Wing (former Mater Hospital), will ensure women in labour can remain in their own room longer before moving to a birth suite, situated within the new centre, and close to the operating theatres.

Central Queensland Health Chief Executive Lisa Blackler says the new centre will provide compassionate and dedicated maternity care for mothers, babies and their families, delivering the care they deserve for generations to come.

“Importantly, the modern facility will be designed to support family bonding and privacy during the crucial early stages of life,” she said.

“As a qualified midwife, I am personally very invested in the spaces we provide for our birthing women.”

The hospital’s Maternity and Paediatric units will relocate to this specially designed space, which will include:

  • 12 single ensuite maternity rooms
  • Two new birthing rooms
  • Two early labour/induction-of-labour suites
  • A dedicated nursery for newborn care
  • Eight single ensuite rooms for paediatric patients.

This new centre will enhance our services and enable our outstanding maternity and paediatric teams to deliver an even better experience for women, babies, and children in the Gladstone region.

Construction is anticipated to be completed this year, subject to weather and building conditions.

The Gladstone modular hospital project is progressing, with design planning under way and early works commenced. Further construction activity will continue in the months ahead.
