We’re upgrading Biloela Hospital to give patients better access and improved quality of healthcare services. These upgrades will also support efforts for staff recruitment, attraction, and retention for Biloela Hospital.

  • We’re completing minor works to the existing Biloela Hospital operating theatre, recovery area and refreshing the birthing suite.
  • We have been working closely with Queensland Health, staff and community to return birthing to Biloela.
  • We’re planning a new purpose-built modular clinic at Biloela Hospital for antenatal and postnatal care.
  • We’ve built new staff accommodation units. This will support the attraction and retention of a skilled workforce.
  • The Biloela Hospital Redevelopment project is progressing under a new planning pathway. This ensures we are delivering buildings that meet community needs now and into the future.
  • We are working on a collaborative approach with our recruitment campaigns to attract and retain a skilled workforce.

New clinic space for antenatal and postnatal care

We’re building a new purpose-built modular clinic that will support the return of birthing services.

The modular will include:

  • two consultation rooms,
  • a waiting area with a children’s play space,
  • work areas and amenities for patients and staff.

The dedicated antenatal and postnatal clinic spaces will enable local teams to support women before and after birth.

The new space will be built on the Biloela Hospital campus.

The new clinic complements recent upgrades to the operating theatre, recovery area and birthing suite at Biloela Hospital.

Timeline

  • Start date: Mid-2026, early works begin.
  • Finish date: Late-2026, weather and building conditions permitting.

Planning for the future of Biloela Hospital

We’re starting work to plan the future of Biloela Hospital, so local healthcare continues to meet the community’s needs now and into the future.

We’ll develop a detailed business case to look at the best options for Biloela. This work will help guide how government funding is spent and support safe, high‑quality care close to home. It will focus on improving patient care, strengthening local health services, and delivering long‑term benefits for the community.

Part of a statewide rural health program

Biloela Hospital is one of 20 hospitals across Queensland progressing to business case stage as part of the Building Rural and Remote Health Program (BRRHP) part of the Queensland Government’s Hospital Rescue Plan. Other communities included range from Hughenden and Proserpine to the Torres Strait and Far North Queensland.

What this planning work will involve

To understand what Biloela needs, the project team will carefully consider:

  • how local health services are used today
  • population growth and future demand
  • clinical and service data from Biloela Hospital
  • cost and value for money considerations
  • input from staff, stakeholders and the community.

The detailed business case will also explore the type of investment needed in the future. This could include upgrading or refurbishing existing buildings, redeveloping parts of the hospital, or potentially building new facilities. The focus will be on creating health facilities that support modern models of care and a strong, sustainable local workforce.

What’s changed

Last year, we shared that the Biloela Hospital redevelopment was moving into the design phase. This approach has now changed.

The Queensland Government has reviewed major health infrastructure projects across the state to make sure future hospitals and health facilities are designed to meet the real needs of communities, both now and into the future.

The Minister for Health announced that a full, detailed business case will be completed for Biloela Hospital this year. Importantly, this process will include community consultation, so locals can be part of the conversation.

Rather than a simple “like‑for‑like” replacement, this approach allows us to take a closer look at what’s needed for regional communities like Biloela, where healthcare needs can be different.

This planning work will continue throughout the year. We’ll share updates, timelines and next steps as the detailed business case progresses, and key milestones are confirmed.

Our priority is delivering safe, sustainable healthcare close to home, and making sure the Biloela community is part of the journey every step of the way.

>> Kim, Director of Nursing and Midwifery:

So I came to work at Biloela Hospital when my husband transferred here. So we were only coming for three years, and we are still here 23 years later.

I think there are some really exciting opportunities for midwives moving forward in Biloela. We're about to reestablish our birthing services after being on bypass for a few years, and that's looking at a change in our model.

>> Di, Clinical midwife:

We're working at top of our scope here as midwives, looking after women out here at Biloela and also in the surrounding areas in the Banana region, working alongside our medical colleagues.

>> Bernie, Midwifery educator:

It's great for the women and it's great for our teams, and it's certainly great to be a midwife in this kind of model because you'll be able to work to your scope of practice.

>> Emma, Registered nurse and student midwife:

We work quite closely with nurses and doctors in Rocky and Gladstone as well. We can always just pick up the phone and call on them for advice or guidance.

>> Sally, Clinical midwife:

Working at Biloela Hospital makes my life really easy.

With the kids, the school's just across the road, and I can pop over if I'm called in. It's never really far to travel anywhere in town, so I can be at sport, swimming, dancing, and then I can come back to the hospital if I'm called in.

>> Bernie:

What is great about the small community is that then the next thing you know, that woman is back having her next baby or her sister. Everyone is interlinked, and it is just a lovely feeling to be part of a community.

>> Sally:

Some of the most favorite parts of my job working rurally is that it's really diverse and things that I wouldn't see working in the city. Going on transfers, interacting with the Retrieval Services Queensland, doing home visits down country roads are just things that I never experienced working in the city.

>> Emma:

Biloela is about an hour away from Tannum Sands and just less than two hours away from Rockhampton.

So my commute to work is about three minutes, and I live on the complete opposite side of town. So I literally just roll in, park for free, and walk into work all within five minutes. It's great.

>> Di:

I definitely think if you would like to develop your skills as a midwife and be well-supported and learn new things and grow as a midwife, this is the place to do it.

I really love being a part of the community.

I've been really lucky and blessed to be a part of the Biloela Netball Association, and I have a wonderful team that I coach.

>> Emma:

So there's plenty of opportunities for partners and families here. So my partner, he works out at the mine.

>> Di:

I feel like I'm a better practitioner because I moved here.

>> Sally:

If you are considering working rurally, Biloela is a great place to be. You can work across the full scope of practice, life is really easy, you're well-supported, and it's a great community to live in.
